Located in the center of Golegã, this church is a landmark of Manueline style in Portugal and a National Monument since 1910.
Built in the 16th century, it replaced an old Gothic church. It was supported by the Crown and local inhabitants, with the involvement of King D. Manuel I, who visited the town and included personal symbols, such as the armillary sphere, in the architecture.
The entrance portal is one of the main attractions. It features detailed decoration with elaborate arches, carved figures, symbols of the king, and a stone image of the Virgin Mary.
It underwent works in the 18th century, which included the bell tower, side altars, and tiles. In the 20th century, restorations returned original Manueline features, such as the pulpit and windows.
The interior has three naves with elaborate columns, a clerestory (high windows), and a main chapel with a star vault. The 18th-century tiles and an image of St. Michael the Archangel also stand out.
The facade includes buttresses, pinnacles, and the bell tower. Inside, there are elements such as sculptures, colorful tiles, and Gothic inscriptions.
