Pedro I himself, in the year 1362. As a testament to this medieval foundation, an ancient plaque can still be seen on the temple's facade, an element that directly links the building to its origins and to the early history of the settlement of Glória do Ribatejo.

Architectural Transformations

Throughout the many centuries of its existence, the Church of Glória do Ribatejo underwent various interventions and modifications to its original structure. These alterations adapted the building to the needs and styles of each era. One of the most notable transformations, which altered the tower's appearance, was the installation of a clock in the 1960s, giving it the image it presents today and distinguishing it from its previous design.

The Associated Legend

The history of this religious temple is shrouded in a legend that links its foundation to an episode experienced by King D. Pedro I. Tradition tells that the monarch, during a hunt, found himself in mortal danger near a deep pool in the region, confronted by a wild beast. In desperation, he is said to have invoked the protection of the Virgin of Glory and, upon finding himself saved, promised to erect a hermitage in that very spot. It is believed that this promise gave rise to the construction of this temple, justifying its name and its strong connection to the village's identity.
