The S. Gregório Fountain is located in the village of Venda da Gaita, part of the Arrascada urbanisation, on the outskirts of Tomar. Its accessible and inviting position is found in a quiet passage area, often used by those traversing the region on foot or by bicycle, marking a transition between the more urban environment and the peripheral areas of the municipality.
This fountain has a history dating back to the mid-19th century. Although the date engraved on its stone indicates 1873, records point to the construction of an original fountain at the site as early as 1841. The fountain was fed by water from the S. Gregório spring, one of seven springs that, in the past, ensured the public water supply to the city of Tomar. This fact underscores its importance in the context of the region's historical water infrastructure.
Over the decades, the S. Gregório Fountain has gained status as a landmark for pilgrims, walkers, and cyclists exploring the trails of the Tomar region. Traditionally, it was a place where travellers could refresh themselves and refill their water bottles.
Currently, the fountain does not have running water, which alters its primary function but does not diminish its value as a heritage element and a landmark for many who pass through, remaining a point of interest for its history and the environment that surrounds it.
