The Fonte da Prata (Silver Fountain) is located in Tomar, in the urban area known as Quinta do Lima. It is currently situated near Praceta Alves Redol and the historic Arcos dos Estaus (Estaus Arches), elements that integrate it into a central and easily accessible setting for those exploring the city.
Its current position, in an urbanized environment, allows for a peaceful observation of the fountain and its surroundings, reflecting the dynamic city life that has accompanied it for over a century.
Inaugurated on February 14, 1897, the Fonte da Prata was originally designed for public water supply in Tomar. Its peculiar name, "da Prata" (of the Silver), derives from the legendary reputation of the water that flowed from it. Considered exceptionally pure, clear, odorless, and tasteless, the water was compared to the preciousness of silver metal due to its superior quality.
Historical documents state that the water, originating from siliceous rocks, was considered so light and easily absorbed that it was even recommended for convalescent individuals, attesting to the value attributed to its qualities at the time.
Throughout its existence, the Fonte da Prata did not remain in a single location. This fountain, notable for its two spouts, had a remarkable journey of relocations. Initially, it was located on the old Rua da Graça (Grace Street), where the Alves Redol roundabout is today.
In 1967, it was transferred to Travessa João Freire and, later, in 2001, it moved again to its current location, next to the Arcos dos Estaus. This history of displacements reflects the urban transformations of Tomar and the importance the fountain maintained as an an element of the city landscape, adapting and persisting through time.
