Located in Castanheira, in the municipality of Ferreira do Zêzere, the Chapel of São Pedro de Castro stands on a hill that offers magnificent views of the Zêzere River and the Lago Azul River Beach.
Its construction dates back to an uncertain period, but it is believed to have been erected on an ancient Roman castro (fortified settlement). It was dedicated to Saint Peter, who is said to have freed the region from a plague. The chapel was rebuilt in the 14th century and retains a Roman tombstone on its main facade.
Built in limestone, it has a chancel with a wooden ceiling divided into three planes. The main altar houses an image of Saint Peter carved in stone in the 16th century, later painted.
Inside, there are oil-painted panels that recount miracles associated with Saint Peter, dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries.
Access is via a dirt road, which may require an all-terrain vehicle or hiking in some sections. The place is ideal for those who appreciate tranquility and nature, and is also suitable for picnics.
The chapel is usually closed and opens on special dates, such as on Saint Michael's Day (September 29th).
The surroundings offer a breathtaking panoramic view and an environment conducive to rest and photography. It is recommended to bring water and provisions, as there are no services on site.
