Located in the Entroncamento area, the National Railway Museum is situated near the railway heart of Entroncamento, in an area that reflects the city's industrial legacy. The building is integrated into a vast railway complex, surrounded by tracks, old workshops, and metallic structures.
The environment combines the presence of large pavilions with outdoor spaces where carriages and locomotives can be seen lined up, offering a direct insight into the relationship between the city and the railway.
The museum holds a collection dating back over a century and a half of railway history in Portugal. Highlights include the Provisions Warehouse, designed by Cottinelli Telmo in 1939, originally intended for supplying railway workers, and the Locomotive Roundhouse, with its 14-track turntable that allowed steam engines to reverse direction.
In the old workshops, now exhibition halls, one can find steam, diesel, and electric locomotives, as well as historic carriages such as the Royal Train and the Presidential Train, testaments to the social and ceremonial function of railways in the past.
The exhibition route gathers ticketing objects, signaling equipment, tools, and uniforms, illustrating daily railway life. Some carriages allow visitors to peek inside, revealing period furniture and details, although not all vehicles are open to the public due to preservation work.
It is complemented by a small circuit of ride-on models, which reproduce the movement of trains in miniature, and with informative panels that contextualize the technological and social development brought by railways.
