The Misericórdia Church is located in the village of Constância, a riverside locality situated in the district of Santarém, in the heart of Portugal. Its position is integrated into the historical urban fabric of the village, contributing to its picturesque and traditional atmosphere, close to the Tagus river.
The history of this temple dates back to the 16th century. It was in 1580 that the Brotherhood of Misericórdia acquired the land for the construction of its own church, with construction work extending through the second half of the 17th century. Throughout the centuries, the building witnessed and participated in important moments for the community. Between 1811 and 1822, for example, the Misericórdia Church served as Constância's main parish church, a period when the village's original mother church was damaged. Later, in the 20th century, between 1941 and 1960, the church was closed for worship due to damage caused by floods, demonstrating its resilience in the face of time's challenges.
The Misericórdia Church is a small-scale example of the Mannerist style. Its facade, with simple but harmonious lines, features a portal dated 1696, framed by pilasters and topped by a niche housing the image of the Virgin. Inside, the single-nave space reveals a remarkable decorative richness. The walls are entirely covered with panels of 17th-century azulejos, predominantly in shades of blue and yellow, with geometric patterns that create a welcoming atmosphere. Along the nave, various canvases depicting the Life of Christ are displayed, enriching the visual experience. The main altarpiece, in gilded carving of the "national style", stands out as the central element, crowned by the coat of arms of D. Pedro II, which underscores the connection between the sacred and royal authority.
Due to its historical, architectural, and artistic value, the Misericórdia Church of Constância is recognized as a significant cultural asset. Since 1978, it has been classified as a Property of Public Interest, a status that attests to its importance in national heritage and ensures its preservation for future generations.
