The Chamusca Bullring is located in the heart of the village of Chamusca. Its position within the locality makes it an easily identifiable and accessible landmark, integrated into the urban fabric of the village, in the municipality of Chamusca.
The village of Chamusca is a place with deep roots and a long history connected to bullfighting. Historical records indicate that the first bullfights in Chamusca date back to 1785, frequently taking place as part of major local celebrations and festivities, such as the ancient Holy Spirit Festivals. The current building stands on a site where simpler structures dedicated to this centuries-old tradition would have already existed, attesting to the continued interest in the activity.
The construction of the Chamusca Bullring, which began in 1917, is a remarkable example of the community's commitment and spirit of unity. The project originated from a popular initiative, led by Alberto Frederico Empis, and was financed through public subscription and the support of local bull breeders. Many inhabitants of Chamusca actively contributed to its construction, offering unpaid days of work, which made the bullring a symbol of collective effort. It was officially inaugurated on August 3, 1919, and in 1922, the construction committee offered it to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia da Chamusca (Holy House of Mercy of Chamusca), which has owned it ever since.
The Chamusca Bullring building displays revivalist architecture with clear Neo-Moorish influences, making it one of the village's most distinctive elements. These characteristics are particularly visible in the tile panels that adorn the low walls and the main facade, featuring intricate geometric motifs. The crenellated merlons that border the entire structure give it a striking silhouette. Also noteworthy is a tile panel above the monumental door, depicting a bull's head and the inscription "Praça de Touros 1919". The access doors to the various areas of the bullring are also finished with tile panels, elements that highlight the style of architect Carlos Augusto Pedroso, who designed the facade.
