The Tomar Power Plant is located in the Quinta do Lima area, integrated into the Levada de Tomar Cultural Complex. This space is situated right in the historic center of the city, in an area that was once an important industrial hub, benefiting from its proximity to the river and its levada (water channel), crucial elements for the operation of the old factories and workshops.
This museum core offers visitors a journey into Tomar's industrial past, focusing on the history of electricity production and distribution. Inside, it is possible to observe the equipment and machinery that bear witness to the operation of the original power plant, providing a clear understanding of how electricity was generated and how it reached the city's homes and streets. The space reflects the material and immaterial dimension of this important industrial legacy.
The Tomar Power Plant is a symbol of progress and innovation. Inaugurated on July 1, 1901, it was one of the first infrastructures in Portugal to provide electric public lighting. This fact positioned Tomar at the forefront of modernity, highlighting it as one of the pioneering cities in accessing this technological revolution. The power plant was born with the purpose of illuminating the city with one hundred lamps, profoundly changing the daily life of Tomar residents of that era.
The Tomar Power Plant space is the result of a rehabilitation and requalification project that integrates the vast Levada Cultural Complex. By opening its doors as a museum core, this site becomes the first industrial space within this complex to be rehabilitated and returned to the community. Its mission is to preserve and value the cultural heritage associated with the history of electrification and industrial development in Tomar, making it accessible and understandable for all interested parties.
