The Chapel of Santo Amaro is located in the tranquil village of Vales, part of the municipality of Ourém. It is situated in an area that invites tranquility, slightly elevated at about 313 meters of altitude, providing a serene environment and a perspective over the rural surroundings of the site.
This small temple bears witness to the presence of the Catholic faith in the region since the mid-17th century. Its original construction dates back to 1633, marking its longevity and importance to the community. Although it underwent a significant reconstruction intervention in 1972, the chapel keeps its heritage and purpose alive throughout the centuries.
The chapel exhibits a simple architectural composition, characteristic of many local religious buildings. It consists of a main nave connected to the chancel, the most sacred space of the temple. It also features a sacristy and an annex, functional elements that complement its structure. Inside, an unadorned retable stands out, contributing to the sobriety and contemplative atmosphere of the space.
Dedicated to Santo Amaro, this chapel is the central point of a significant annual manifestation of faith. Every year, on January 15th, the day of its patron saint, the local community and devotees gather for a pilgrimage dedicated to Santo Amaro, perpetuating a tradition that links the present to the past and popular devotion.
