The Ceras Chapel is located in the small village of Freixo, part of the parish of Casais e Alviobeira, in the municipality of Tomar. Situated in a predominantly rural setting, its location offers a tranquil scenery, inviting a serene experience and an authentic connection with the local heritage.
This chapel, whose origin dates back to 1755, bears witness to almost three centuries of history in the region. It was commissioned by Antão Medeiros Leitão, a prominent figure who served as captain-major and lord proprietor of Ilha da Praia, in Cape Verde. Residing in Ceras, Antão Medeiros Leitão and his wife are buried in this location, and their tombs are visible to visitors, establishing a direct link between the chapel and the memory of a family of importance to the community.
The Ceras Chapel is renowned for its architectural value, featuring elements that reflect the style and art of the period of its construction. Recently, it benefited from careful restoration work, aimed at preserving its original identity and beauty. Among the interventions carried out, the renovation of the roof and plasterwork stands out, as well as the meticulous recovery of its three gilded altars. These altars are pieces of great artistic refinement, which enrich the chapel's interior and captivate the attention of visitors. The restorations also covered the sacristy and access to the choir, where an iron staircase was replaced by a crafted wooden structure, lending greater harmony to the space.
