It is located in Alpiarça, in the district of Santarém, Portugal.
It opened as a museum on May 15, 1960, and attracts thousands of visitors annually.
It was designed by the architect Raul Lino between 1905 and 1909, commissioned by José Relvas, a prominent figure in Portuguese history, known for his role in the proclamation of the Republic in 1910.
José Relvas left the house and the associated estate to the municipality of Alpiarça, stipulating in his 1929 will that it be maintained as a museum.
Since 1996, it has been classified as a Property of Public Interest.
