The Pillory of Alcanede is situated in the center of the town of Alcanede, which belongs to the municipality and district of Santarém. Its placement in an open space allows for a clear view of the monument and its urban surroundings. Its presence marks a landmark in the central area of the town.
This monument marks the former autonomy and jurisdiction of what was the municipality of Alcanede. Its construction dates back to the 15th century, a period of renewal and affirmation of municipal powers in Portugal. The Pillory of Alcanede is historically linked to the granting of a new charter by King Manuel I, dated 1514. It represented royal authority and local judicial and administrative power, serving as a central point for the enforcement of laws and the performance of various public community acts.
Built of local limestone, the Pillory of Alcanede rises on a circular base with three steps. Its column has an octagonal shaft, adorned with sculpted elements that highlight the predominant style of the period, the Manueline style. These decorative details contribute to the monument's distinction. At its top, additional elements once complemented its form and reinforced the symbolism associated with power and justice.
