Location

Situated at the highest point of the hill where the city of Abrantes stands, in the São João area, the Keep (Torre de Menagem) occupies a prominent position. Its unique location offers a 360-degree panoramic view over the entire surrounding region. Visitors can enjoy a vast and unobstructed horizon, reaching impressive distances on days of good visibility. The perspective includes the Tagus river plain, the vast floodplain, and the Alentejo heathland, extending to the Beira mountains, creating a natural scene of great beauty.

Memory and Architectural Design

This imposing quadrangular structure was erected by order of King Dinis in the year 1300. It stands out for its peculiar location, not on the periphery, but in the center of the parade ground, which gives it a unique character. Originally, the tower consisted of three floors. However, in 1531, a strong earthquake caused the collapse of the two upper stories, significantly altering its height and configuration. Later, in the 19th century, interventions were carried out which ended up altering some of its original medieval features, but the tower retains its imposing presence and its importance as a testament to the history of Abrantes.
