The Governors' Palace is situated in the elevated area of São João, in the town of Abrantes, offering a prominent position in the urban landscape. It is strategically placed at the top of the hill, providing a privileged perspective over the surroundings. Its structure stands next to the old eastern entrance of the defensive perimeter.
Also known as the Alcaides' Palace, this building is a testament to the historical evolution of Abrantes. In the 15th century, with the growing ambition of the nobility to transform fortifications into stately residences, this palace was shaped by that trend. Its existence reflects the transition from a purely military function to a space for habitation and social representation, demonstrating the change in status and the aspirations of the families who once governed the region.
Although now in ruins, the Governors' Palace still reveals traces of its original grandeur. One can observe a facade that majestically stands out above the adjacent walls, with a gallery that opens onto the city of Abrantes. Inside, the remains of vaulted rooms persist, namely eleven interconnected spaces covered by brick barrel vaults. These architectural elements, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, offer insight into the scale and construction style of the era. From this location, it is possible to appreciate a vast panoramic view of the city of Abrantes and the surrounding landscape.
