The Jardim da Republica (Republic Garden) is located in the São João area, in the heart of Abrantes. This green space occupies a central position in the town, being historically recognized as the city's old Rossio (public square) or Largo da Feira (Fair Square). Over time, it has been a traditional meeting point and a stage for various events, which gives it a significant role in daily life and local history.
The creation of this garden dates back to the late 19th century, having received its current designation in 1910. Inside, stands the Monument to the Dead of the Great War (1914-1918), a work by sculptor Ruy Roque Gameiro. This piece is particularly notable for being the first sculpture of its kind to be executed in cement and iron in Portugal, symbolizing the soldiers, known and unknown, who lost their lives in the Battle of La Lys, in April 1918. From 1942 onwards, the garden took on an even more prominent role in the city's urban planning, aligning with the "Abrantes, City of Flowers" initiative.
The Jardim da Republica offers an inviting atmosphere, characterized by a careful arrangement of green spaces, lawns, and flowerbeds displaying a variety of colorful flowers. Paved paths invite leisurely strolls, and benches placed in shaded areas provide moments of rest. The abundant and diverse vegetation contributes to a serene and pleasant atmosphere. Additionally, the garden features a dedicated children's area with a playground, and a bandstand, which adds a unique architectural element to the setting. The visual harmony between natural elements and the urban surroundings makes this garden one of the most sought-after locations for taking photographs in Abrantes.
