Located in the town of Avintes, in Vila Nova de Gaia, Zoo Santo Inácio is a short distance from the city of Porto. It is recognized as the largest and greenest zoo in the North of Portugal. Its vast area, set in a natural environment, provides a tranquil setting conducive to wildlife observation.
Zoo Santo Inácio is home to hundreds of animals of diverse species, originating from the five continents. Visitors have the opportunity to observe a wide variety of fauna, from large felines and African mammals to exotic birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. The diversity of created habitats allows for a simulated journey through different ecosystems of the world.
Wildlife conservation is one of Zoo Santo Inácio's main missions. The park is actively dedicated to the protection of endangered species, collaborating in European breeding and preservation programs. The objective is to raise visitors' awareness of the importance of biodiversity and to ensure the well-being of the animals, keeping them in environments that replicate their natural habitats as much as possible.
The zoo offers some remarkable facilities that allow for closer observation of the animals. Highlighted is the glass tunnel that crosses the habitat of the Asiatic lions, providing a unique perspective on these felines. Other notable areas include the representation of the African savanna, where various species cohabit, a reptilarium with diverse snakes, lizards, and amphibians, and the nocturnal animal house, which explores the world of invertebrates and other creatures of the night.
The ample green spaces are a distinctive feature of Zoo Santo Inácio. The park's design seeks to recreate the natural habitats of the species, utilizing dense vegetation and suitable environments for each group of animals. This approach creates an immersive atmosphere for visitors, who can wander through areas resembling different parts of the world and observe the animals in a more authentic and less artificial setting.
