Located in the city of Porto, in the parish of Vitória, at the top of Rua dos Clérigos, the Clérigos Church and Tower form one of the city's most iconic landmarks.
This architectural ensemble, designed by the Italian Nicolau Nasoni in the 18th century, is a remarkable example of late Baroque style in Portugal, with ornamental forms and an undulating façade, very rich in decorative details.
Built between 1732 and 1749, the church has a unique elliptical plan and is known for its granite decoration, with richly worked pulpits and altars. The high altar stands out with colorful marbles and images of saints.
With 75 meters in height, the bell tower, built between 1754 and 1763, is the ultimate symbol of Porto. The ascent of the 225 steps rewards visitors with panoramic views of the city.
The ensemble was built for the Brotherhood of Clérigos, a religious association that assisted needy clergy. Construction began with the church, followed by the Brotherhood House and, finally, the tower.
Built between 1754 and 1758, the Brotherhood House served as a residence and infirmary for clergymen, now transformed into a museum space that tells the history of the Brotherhood.
In addition to serving as a bell tower, the Clérigos Tower had several uses, such as an orientation point for boats on the Douro River, a commercial telegraph, and a landmark for historical battles.
The Clérigos Tower is one of the most visited attractions in Porto, considered an excellent viewpoint with 360º views over the city. Day or night, it is a must-see for anyone visiting Porto.
In 2014, the ensemble underwent a major renovation, receiving awards for restoration and enhancement of heritage. Today, both the church and the tower are open to the public.
