The Biological Park of Gaia is located in Vilar de Andorinho, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia. It is situated in an area of agro-forestry characteristics, nestled in the valley of the Febros River, a watercourse that flows into the Douro. This unique location allows visitors to observe the natural and rural landscape that the park preserves, creating an interesting contrast with the surrounding urban area of Gaia.

A Natural and Rural Legacy

Covering approximately 35 hectares, the fundamental purpose of the Biological Park of Gaia is to present the region's landscape as it once was. It is a space where one can observe native fauna and flora up close, with their habitats recreated. Throughout the park, characteristic elements of the rural past are maintained, such as old houses and watermills, which contribute to the understanding of the way of life of past populations.

Wildlife Sanctuary

This park is a true sanctuary for various species of wild animals, especially birds. More than forty species of wild birds choose this place to nest, and many others make a stop here during their migratory routes. One of the park's valuable assets is its animal collection and recovery center, which provides care for injured or rescued specimens from precarious situations. This center, with its own veterinary clinic, not only contributes to wildlife rehabilitation but also offers a unique opportunity to observe some of these species up close, such as birds of prey, which would be difficult to spot with such proximity in nature.

Discovery Trails

To explore the diversity of the park, there is a well-defined pedestrian route, approximately three kilometers long. This path, properly paved and signposted, guides visitors through different environments, from lakes to aviaries with various animals and plants. Along the route, informative showcases and flora identification signs are found, enriching the experience. Rural elements, such as threshing floors, granaries, and small agricultural farms, punctuate the path, providing an immersion in the region's agricultural heritage and culture.
