Situated in Vila Nova de Gaia, in the parish of Santa Marinha, this garden occupies an elevated position on the south bank of the Douro River. Its name, "Jardim do Morro" (Garden of the Hill), reflects its location at the foot of Serra do Pilar, next to the upper deck of the iconic D. Luís I Bridge. This configuration offers a remarkable observation point over the historic area of Porto, notable for its pedestrian accessibility from the bridge.
The Jardim do Morro constitutes a serene space in the heart of the urban area. It is a place that invites relaxation, with its well-maintained lawns and flowerbeds displaying a variety of plant species. Among these, aligned lime trees stand out, giving a particular ambiance to the walkway. The garden also includes a lake with a grotto and a bandstand, elements that enrich its environment and invite tranquility and contemplation.
This garden is renowned for the impressive panoramic view it offers over the city of Porto. From various points in the park, it is possible to observe Ribeira with its pastel-coloured houses, the winding Douro River, and the majestic structure of the D. Luís I Bridge. This landscape makes it a privileged location for moments of contemplation and for capturing memorable images, especially when the sunlight fades on the horizon, creating a spectacle of colours and reflections on the water.
Inaugurated in Vila Nova de Gaia in 1927, the Jardim do Morro was conceived as an essential green space for urban life. Its location is historically significant, having once been part of the grounds of the Serra do Pilar Monastery. Over the years, the garden has maintained its essence, undergoing periodic interventions to preserve its environment and infrastructure, ensuring it continues to be a meeting point and a place for enjoying the landscape.
