The Pillory of Vila do Conde was erected in 1538 to symbolize local authority, replacing a previous one made of wood.
It is an example of the Manueline style, with a twisted shaft and an octagonal base. The capital displays the Portuguese royal coat of arms.
After several transfers, it has been located in Praça Vasco da Gama since 1913, near the Town Hall and the Main Church.
The pillory features an iron sword at the top, and the inscriptions on the faces of the pedestal tell its history and changes of location.
Classified as a National Monument, it is a cultural and historical landmark that deserves to be visited by tourists.
