Closed in the 19th century, the convent left behind this imposing church, now classified as a National Monument, a testament to the region's rich religious and artistic history.

Architectural Features

The Church of Santa Clara displays a fascinating fusion of styles, being a relevant example of Gothic architecture in Portugal. Over the centuries, its structure incorporated Manueline elements, and traces of Baroque and Rococo interventions can also be observed. Inside, the single nave is covered by a magnificent ribbed vault, demonstrating the construction mastery of the era. Access to the temple is through a side portal, located on the north façade, a distinctive feature of its composition.

The Pantheon of the Donors

One of the most notable features inside the temple is the Founders' Chapel, located on the Gospel side. This unique space is also crowned by a ribbed vault and houses the tombs of D. Afonso Sanches and D. Teresa Martins. The sculptures adorning these tombs are of remarkable artistic quality, displaying details in the Manueline style that merit close observation, representing a legacy of great historical and artistic value.
