Located on Rua da Lapa, near the Agricultural Cooperative, this church is in the city of Vila do Conde, in the district of Porto. It is a historical and religious point of interest in the city center.
The church was built in 1758, becoming one of the main monuments of the city. The facade is striking, with two imposing towers, but the interior is simpler and more modest.
Before the Church of Lapa existed, there were two important chapels on the site: that of São Sebastião, built in 1548, and that of São Bartolomeu, which was located at the eastern entrance to Vila do Conde. It was in the chapel of São Bartolomeu that the devotion to Nossa Senhora da Lapa began, still in the early 18th century.
The initial project was inspired by the Church of Nossa Senhora da Lapa in Porto, designed by José de Figueiredo Seixas, one of the great names in religious architecture of the time. However, some elements were altered and expanded during construction.
The church stands out for its neoclassical carvings that adorn the altar and other internal elements, with an exquisite, albeit discreet, style characteristic of the late 18th century.
After the homonymous church in Porto, this is the most imposing church dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Lapa, and its history and architecture make it an essential place to visit for those interested in the history and culture of Vila do Conde.
