The church belongs to the Brotherhood of Mercy, founded in 1510, and its construction began in 1559. It was built on the site of the old Chapel of São Miguel o Anjo, with a Mannerist architectural style and Renaissance details.
The church's facade, inspired by the Renaissance, is marked by four robust columns and features two stone sculptures representing Our Lady of the Conception and the Visitation, as well as a central window at the top of the facade.
The single-nave interior is decorated with 17th-century tile panels that line the walls. Also noteworthy are the wooden coffered ceiling, painted with floral motifs, and the ebony grilles that delineate the main altar.
The altarpiece in baroque carving is a work by Manuel Rocha, added in the 18th century. The side chapels have canvases from 1703, representing biblical scenes, such as the "Deposition in the Tomb" and "Veronica".
In the high choir, there is an Iberian organ, with a structure decorated in polychrome wood carvings, originally from the Monastery of S. Simão da Junqueira. This instrument was acquired in 1773 and restored in 2002.
The staffs of the Administrative Board, with paintings and golden details, represent the power and hierarchy of the Brotherhood. In addition, the church keeps old flags, with paintings of Our Lady of Mercy and Our Lady of Piety, used in religious ceremonies.
In 2009, the church underwent a major conservation process, where the tiles, the wooden ceiling and the ornaments of the chapels were restored, preserving the artistic and historical value of this space.
