The Vila do Conde Aqueduct, also known as the Santa Clara Aqueduct, stands in the town of Vila do Conde, integrated into its urban fabric, in the Porto district. Memory and Purpose

The history of the Aqueduct dates back to the 18th century, with its construction beginning in 1705 and concluding in 1714. The initiative for this grandiose work came from D. Bárbara Micaela de Ataíde, then Abbess of the Convent of Santa Clara, with the essential purpose of ensuring the water supply to that convent, a vital institution at the time. Its historical and heritage relevance was officially recognized in 1910, when it was classified as a National Monument.

Baroque Engineering and Architecture

Built of stone, the Vila do Conde Aqueduct features a distinct architectural design in the Baroque style, a hallmark of the century in which it was erected. Its impressive length is punctuated by a succession of arches, originally numbering 999 in total. Although some of these arches show signs of time and damage, the Aqueduct remains one of the aqueducts with the largest number of arches in the world, a testament to the remarkable engineering of the era.
