Situated at the highest point of the Historic Centre of Santa Marinha, in Vila Nova de Gaia, the Upper Station of the Cable Car offers a privileged position. From here, visitors can contemplate a unique perspective of the Douro River and the landscape of the opposite bank, framing the urban silhouette of Porto. Its placement atop the escarpment allows for a comprehensive view of the vast horizon, inviting observation of the dynamic landscape.
The Gaia Cable Car project, designed by architects Cristina Guedes and Francisco Vieira de Campos, stands out for its conception integrated into the urban environment. The Upper Station, in particular, is built mostly of reinforced concrete and was designed to lean against and merge with the natural escarpment. Its relatively contained scale seeks to create a sense of proximity and welcome, contrasting with the robustness of the infrastructure, and reflects a care in harmonizing the construction with the natural surroundings.
At the Upper Station, the visitor's experience is enhanced by a set of elements that guide the observation of the landscape. A system of ramps and terraces invites a journey that gradually unveils the view, evoking a planned walk for the enjoyment of the scenery. Distinctive elements, such as the "glasses", openings carefully carved into the structure's concrete, function as frames that encompass specific points of the panorama, transforming observation into a moment of discovery and appreciation of the city views.
