The Helena Sá e Costa Theatre is located in the Fontinha area, in the heart of Porto. It is integrated into the complex of the Superior School of Music and Performing Arts (ESMAE), a reference higher education institution. Its position is peculiar, as it was erected in the inner courtyard of a historic building, the former Primary Teaching College, an architectural landmark dating back to 1883. This insertion gives it a distinctive atmosphere and an intimate relationship with the urban and academic fabric of the city.
This theatre honors the name of Helena Sá e Costa, a notable pianist from Porto, whose contribution to Portuguese culture and the training of successive generations of artists is of great relevance. By bestowing her name upon this prominent figure, the space establishes itself as a symbol of artistic excellence and dedication to the teaching of the arts that the pianist represented.
The Helena Sá e Costa Theatre is a contemporary work designed in 1996 by Portuguese architect Filipe Oliveira Dias, and was inaugurated in 1999. Its construction is notable for having been conceived from scratch for the central courtyard of a pre-existing building with historical significance for education in the country. This architectural solution allowed for the creation of a modern space suitable for performing arts, while preserving the original surrounding structure. Its inauguration coincided with a period of great cultural effervescence in the city, with the theatre being part of the official program of Porto 2001, European Capital of Culture.
Functioning as a theatre-school, this space is intrinsically linked to the Superior School of Music and Performing Arts. Its main vocation lies in supporting higher education in the arts, particularly dance, music, and theatre. It is a place where the discovery of new talents is fostered and emerging artistic projects are propelled. Thus, the theatre is not only a stage for performances, but also a learning laboratory and a meeting point for creativity, actively contributing to the cultural vitality of Porto.
