The Teatro de São Bento da Vitória is located in a central and historically rich area of the city of Porto. It is situated in the parish of Vitória, an area that once formed part of the medieval urban fabric, next to the old Porta do Olival. Its position is prominent, integrated into the Cordoaria complex, very close to the building that housed the old Cadeia da Relação, currently occupied by the Portuguese Centre of Photography. This location invites exploration of the city's oldest urban layout.
The space known as Teatro de São Bento da Vitória is part of a monument with a centuries-old history. Built from the late 16th century onwards, this building was originally a Benedictine monastery, becoming one of Porto's most significant religious complexes. Throughout the centuries, the site witnessed various transformations, serving, for example, as a military hospital and barracks after the dissolution of religious orders in Portugal. Its architectural grandeur, with a typology that transitions between Mannerism and Baroque, reflects a long process of construction and embellishment, with elements that mirror the evolution of Portuguese art. In 1977, the complex was officially classified as a National Monument, recognizing its cultural and heritage value.
The designation Teatro de São Bento da Vitória refers to the use of a specific and significant part of this former monastery as a vibrant cultural stage. Since 2007, the São João National Theatre has established here one of its most unique performance spaces: the majestic Noble Cloister. This cloister, an impressive work in granite, was adapted to host a variety of theatrical performances, concerts, and other artistic events. The interventions carried out, such as the installation of an acoustic shell and a wooden floor, initiatives that took place within the scope of Porto 2001, European Capital of Culture, transformed this historic courtyard into a place with special characteristics for performance. Attending a show in this environment offers a distinct perspective on the intersection between centuries-old heritage and contemporary artistic expression in Porto.
