The Mother Church of Soalhães, also known as the Church of Saint Martin, stands in the locality of Laudário, within the parish of Soalhães, in the municipality of Marco de Canaveses. It is located in the district of Porto, in an environment that reflects the landscape and essence of the region.
This remarkable monument holds significant recognition within the Portuguese heritage scene, having been classified as a National Monument since 1927. Its historical and cultural importance is further highlighted by its inclusion in the Route of the Romanesque, an itinerary that showcases the valuable medieval heritage built in the Sousa, Tâmega, and Douro Valleys.
The history of the Church of Saint Martin dates back to medieval times, founded on the foundations of an ancient basilica from the 9th century. This basilica, which allegedly housed Martinian relics, gave Soalhães great importance during the Middle Ages, establishing the site as a religious and cultural landmark in the region.
Among the most distinctive elements of this religious building, its main portal stands out, dating from the 14th century and designed in the characteristic Proto-Gothic style. Over the centuries, the church has undergone several interventions, notably major renovations in the 18th century. These interventions, while adding new elements and styles, altered many of its original features, revealing a fusion of architectural periods that narrate its evolution over time.
Inside the Mother Church of Soalhães, visitors are invited to discover a collection of artistic elements of great value and devotion. Among them, a tomb from the 13th or 14th century stands out, a testament to its long and rich history. The space is enriched by a vibrant decoration, with azulejo tile panels and a profusion of colourful woodcarvings that adorn the altars and decorative elements, lending the environment an atmosphere of unique beauty and artistic richness, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful churches in Portugal.
