Located in Largo do Dr. Pedro Vitorino, in the parish of Sé, Porto. It leans against a wall of Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto), in an area of great historical and cultural value.
The fountain was built in the 17th century, originally on Rua Escura. It was transferred to its current location in 1940, as part of a revitalization project for the area surrounding the Cathedral (Sé).
Made in Mannerist style, it features a quadrangular basin and a backrest decorated with a sculpted pelican at its center, a symbol of Mercy. It is flanked by two human figures and topped by a coat of arms with the Portuguese royal insignia.
The pelican on the fountain represents Mercy, a symbol of self-sacrifice and generosity, widely used in sacred art.
This fountain has been classified as a Public Interest Property since 1938, highlighting its historical and architectural importance.
Although it is an interesting tourist spot, the fountain currently does not spout water. Nevertheless, it is an excellent example of Porto's historical architecture and urban planning.
It can be easily visited by descending the stairs at Terreiro da Sé, a path that passes by several points of interest, such as the Pillory (Pelourinho) and the City Tower.
The fountain is located in the heart of Porto's historic center, surrounded by ancient buildings and narrow streets, offering an authentic experience of medieval Porto.
