Located in the parish of Sé, in the city of Porto, Portugal, the chapel is easily accessible and close to other tourist attractions.
Classified as a national monument since 1927, it stands out as an important example of the transition from the Gothic to the Mannerist style, with Flemish influences.
Originally, the image of São Bom Homem and Nossa Senhora de Agosto was venerated in a house near the Cathedral (Sé). The construction of the chapel began in 1554, with the support of the bishop of the time. After some works, it was completed in 1565.
In 1853, the chapel underwent improvements, and due to demolition works in the area, it was expropriated by the Porto City Council in 1935. In 1953, it was rebuilt in its current location, between Rua do Sol and Rua de São Luís.
The space is illuminated by a large window and features a late-Gothic vault, reflecting the transition to the Mannerist style. The arch that separates the nave from the chancel is decorated with Ionic pilasters.
The Mannerist altarpiece is composed of eight panels that illustrate scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, respecting the guidelines of the Council of Trent. The paintings are attributed to Francisco Correia, dated between 1590 and 1600.
In the center of the altarpiece, there is the ancient image of Nossa Senhora de Agosto, which reveals influences from North European art.
The chapel is a place of devotion and also a point of historical and architectural interest, ideal for those who appreciate art and local history.
