The Solar dos Magalhães is located in the center of Amarante, in the parish of São Gonçalo, and is an 18th-century manor house.
Classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1971, this manor house is an important landmark in the city's history and symbolizes the resistance of the people of Amarante during the Napoleonic invasion.
Although it was burned by French troops in 1809, the exterior walls still remain. The building has a polygonal plan, with two floors and an imposing facade, highlighting a loggia on the ground floor with six arches.
On the main floor, a balcony with Ionic columns embellishes the facade. The other facades have regularly arranged windows, with balconies on the upper floor.
Built by António de Magalhães Cerqueira, the manor house was owned by the Magalhães e Meneses family for many years. In the 19th century, the house was sold to José Monteiro Carvalhal, and the family's coat of arms was removed.
In 1809, the Solar dos Magalhães became a symbol of resistance against the French troops. For each day that the resistance delayed the passage through the São Gonçalo Bridge, the French general retaliated by burning noble houses, but the manor house was never rebuilt, remaining as a testament to the attacks.
In 2020, works began to transform what remained of the building into the "House of Memory" of Amarante, under a project by the architect Siza Vieira. Today, the manor house is one of the main tourist attractions of the city.
