Sanctuary of Saint Rita of Cascia

Category: Religious Architecture > Church

District: Porto > Valongo > Ermesinde > Formiga

Location

The Sanctuary of Santa Rita de Cássia is located in Ermesinde, municipality of Valongo, in the area known as Formiga. Situated within an urban environment, this sacred place is a landmark in the city's landscape, easily identifiable.

Its position within Ermesinde allows for a harmonious integration with the local life, while offering a space for contemplation and serenity, distinct from the city bustle.

A Deep Historical Root

The history of the Sanctuary dates back to October 12, 1749, the date on which the first stone was laid for what would become a convent. Built by the Discalced Hermit Friars of Saint Augustine, on a farm where a small hermitage already existed, the site was originally dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Bom Despacho and Santa Rita.

Over the centuries, the building witnessed significant moments, such as its use as a hospital during the Siege of Porto, between 1832 and 1833. After the dissolution of religious orders, the space assumed various functions, including that of a boarding school and college. It was in 1956 that this church was formally elevated to the category of Diocesan Sanctuary, reinforcing its religious significance.

Architecture and Center of Devotion

The Sanctuary's architecture features striking characteristics of Porto Baroque, visible in its external structure, while the interior reveals a neoclassical-style decoration, providing an interesting contrast. This combination of styles contributes to its visual singularity and to the atmosphere of contemplation.

Considered one of the most sought-after sanctuaries in Northern Portugal, the space annually attracts thousands of pilgrims. It is a place of deep devotion to Santa Rita de Cássia, often invoked as the "Saint of the Impossible," a refuge of hope and faith for those seeking comfort and intercession in times of difficulty.

A Musical Heritage: The Pipe Organ

The Sanctuary houses a remarkable pipe organ, solemnly inaugurated in 2002. This instrument, built by a renowned Swiss company, consists of 26 stops, three keyboards, and a total of 1512 pipes, of which 110 are made of wood.

Its exterior structure, of modern design, was conceived to create a visual dialogue with the church's baroque elements, using solid oak wood with red details and gilded finishes on the pipes. This musical piece not only liturgically enriches the temple but also stands as an element of great artistic and cultural value, contributing to the sensory experience of visitors.
