The Bolhão Market is located in the parish of Santo Ildefonso, in the center of Porto, surrounded by Fernandes Tomás, Formosa, Alexandre Braga, and Sá da Bandeira streets. It is easily accessible on foot and by public transport, including the metro.
The market is a building of great historical importance, inaugurated in 1914 and classified as a property of public interest since 2006. Its construction is an example of neoclassical architecture, with emphasis on the use of reinforced concrete and metal structures. In 2022, after four years of rehabilitation, it reopened with a renovated space, maintaining its traditional character.
The market is divided into two floors, accessible through various entrances. The entrance through Rua Formosa leads to the ground floor, while the entrances through the side streets and Rua Fernandes Tomás allow access to the upper floor. The building also has a logistics basement to facilitate loading and unloading, without disturbing traffic.
Bolhão is famous for its fresh products, mainly fish, meat, fruits, and vegetables. In addition, there are shops outside that sell a variety of other products, such as clothing, perfumes, and cafes. The traditional shops around, such as Casa Chineza and Pérola do Bolhão, are interesting stops for typical products.
The upper floor of the market has 10 restaurants that are committed to acquiring products directly from Bolhão. Here, visitors can enjoy typical Portuguese dishes, prepared with fresh ingredients from the market.
The atmosphere of Bolhão is unique, mixing the traditional and the modern. The renovated space preserves the soul of the old market, with local vendors and the authenticity of traditional commerce. During the visit, tourists can also observe architectural details, such as the original restored tiles.
The name "Bolhão" comes from a bubble of water that formed in the area, where there used to be a meadow. The market, in addition to its commercial function, is also a point of cultural and historical interest in Porto.
