The equestrian statue of D. Pedro IV stands majestically in Liberdade Square, the heart of downtown Porto. This monument occupies a central and prominent position in the city's urban space, serving as a visible and easily accessible landmark for those exploring the Porto area.
This monument honours D. Pedro IV, a pivotal figure in Portuguese history, whose role was decisive during the Liberal Wars. The statue depicts the monarch in bronze, dressed in the uniform of the 5th Chasseurs, and is notable for the symbolism of the elements it displays.
In his right hand, D. Pedro IV holds the Constitutional Charter of 1826, a fundamental document that defined liberalism in Portugal. In his left hand, he holds the reins of his horse, in a posture that evokes his leadership and determination.
The foundation stone for the construction of this historic landmark was laid on July 9, 1862, culminating in its solemn inauguration on October 19, 1866. The work was designed by the French sculptor Jean Anatole Calmels, who crafted it with remarkable attention to detail and respect for the historical figure.
The statue of D. Pedro IV itself is approximately five metres high and weighs about five tonnes. However, the complete monument, including its robust pedestal, reaches a total height of about ten metres, giving it a striking presence in the urban landscape.
The statue's pedestal is adorned with two bas-reliefs that illustrate crucial moments in the life of D. Pedro IV, giving it a narrative dimension. Although the originals were made of Carrara marble, they were later replaced by bronze replicas.
One of the reliefs depicts the historic Landing of D. Pedro IV at Mindelo beach, where he is portrayed handing the flag to José Estêvão de Morais, a pivotal episode for the liberal cause. The other bas-relief represents the offering of D. Pedro IV's heart to the city of Porto, a symbolic gesture of deep affection for the city that so strongly supported him.
