Located in Batalha Square, in the heart of Porto, Cinema Batalha is an iconic venue that is part of the city's cultural history.
The cinema began as the Salão High-Life in 1906, and in 1913 it became known as Cinema Batalha. The current building was inaugurated in 1947, after the demolition of the original.
Architect Artur Andrade's project features a modern style, with influences from Art Deco and the International Style. The main hall has a capacity for 950 spectators.
The cinema is decorated with works by renowned artists, including frescoes and sculptures that reflect cinematographic art and the history of cinema in Portugal.
Throughout its history, the cinema faced censorship, especially during the Estado Novo regime. Some artworks were altered or hidden due to political pressure.
Cinema Batalha has a rich cultural program, which includes premieres of classic films and film club events. The Sala Bebé, inaugurated in 1976, offers a space for smaller screenings.
After a period of closure, the cinema reopened in 2006 and underwent significant rehabilitation that culminated in its reopening in December 2022, with the name Batalha Centro de Cinema.
The new space includes two screening rooms, a cinema library, a media library, and a visual arts gallery, as well as a rooftop terrace.
Cinema Batalha is not just a place to watch movies, but also a space for cultural events, exhibitions, and community activities.
Visiting Cinema Batalha offers a combination of history, art, and cinema, providing a rich and engaging experience for tourists.
