Located on the Serra do Pilar, in Vila Nova de Gaia, with an elevated position above the Douro River. It offers a privileged view of the city of Porto, the Historic Center, and the Luís I Bridge.
Founded in 1538, initially to house the community of the Monastery of Grijó, of the Order of Saint Augustine. Over the years, it underwent several expansions and alterations. It became known as the "Serra do Pilar Monastery" due to the devotion to the Virgin of the Pillar.
It stands out for its unique architecture and the circular plan of the church and cloister, a rare example in the country and in Europe. It combines influences of the Renaissance and Mannerism, with an imposing dome and a vaulted gallery.
In 1910, it was classified as a National Monument, and in 1996, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, along with the Historic Center of Porto and the Luís I Bridge.
Today, the monastery has religious, cultural, and military functions. Since 2012, it has been open to the public and has a tourist information center about the heritage of northern Portugal. Part of the building continues to be used by the Portuguese Army.
Annually, on August 15th, a traditional fair takes place near the monastery, in homage to the ancient devotion to the Virgin of the Pillar.
With a strategic location, the monastery was used as a point of defense on several occasions, such as during the French invasions and the Siege of Porto. Part of the structures was converted into a fortification to house troops and armaments.
