Casa da Família Barbot, also known as Casa Barbot, is located on Avenida da República, in the parish of Santa Marinha, in Vila Nova de Gaia, in the District of Porto.
The property was acquired by the Vila Nova de Gaia City Council, which restored it and transformed it into the House of Culture. Here, exhibitions and events such as debates, colloquia, seminars, workshops, book launches, and concerts take place.
Casa Barbot is classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1982, standing out for its historical and architectural value.
Built in 1904 by Bernardo Pinto Abrunhosa, the house gained the name Barbot in 1945, when Ermelinda Barbot became the owner. The site benefited from the collaboration of artists such as the architect Ventura Terra and the sculptor Alves de Sousa.
It is the only example of Art Nouveau in Vila Nova de Gaia, with Arab, neoclassical, and oriental influences. The original structure remains with a basement and two floors.
The facade features two overlapping balconies and a circular balcony at the corner. The terrace has a hexagonal roof and a staircase leading to the portal, protected by an iron roof. The style reflects the influence of the Second French Empire of Napoleon III.
The gardens of Casa Barbot are a pleasant space for walks and relaxation, complementing the visit to the building and providing contact with nature.
