The Church of Santa Eufémia is located at the highest point of the Alvarelhos mountain range, an area known as Monte de Santa Eufémia. From this spot, the view stretches across a vast landscape, encompassing both land and sea, and allowing sight of several surrounding municipalities, such as Matosinhos, Maia, Vila do Conde, and Póvoa de Varzim.
In the past, its prominent position, visible even from the high seas, may have served as a reference point for navigators, highlighting its geographical and symbolic importance in the region.
The history of the Church of Santa Eufémia dates back to a primitive hermitage, whose construction, according to indications such as an old Ançã stone image, may date from the late 16th century. Already in 1728, the temple underwent a significant enlargement, as can be read in an inscription on its main door, which celebrates the dedication of the devotees.
Over the centuries, the church underwent various interventions, including a reform in 1899. More recently, in 1996, it was subjected to a profound restoration, enlargement, and complete renovation, giving it its current configuration.
The interior of the church features three distinct altars. On the main altar are the images of Saint Eufémia, Saint Barnabas, and Saint Quiteria. The side altars are dedicated to Saint Rita of Cascia, on the left, and Saint Lucy, on the right.
Next to the celebration area, on a granite stone pedestal, the image of Saint Expeditus is also venerated, complementing the set of sacred figures present in this place of worship.
The site is a testament to the profound and centuries-old devotion to Saint Eufémia, martyr of Chalcedon. A votive offering from the year 1785, an oil painting on wood that has survived to this day, well illustrates the popular belief in her intercession, particularly for those facing dangers at sea or serious illnesses.
This tradition of faith remains alive, and annually, in the third week of September, the site transforms into a pilgrimage destination that attracts a large number of people from various parts of the country, perpetuating the connection between the community and the figure of the Saint.
A few meters from the church, an impressive granite monumental cross stands tall. This structure, 14 meters high, stands out for its artistic craftsmanship and its imposing presence in the landscape.
The cross was erected at the beginning of the 20th century, having been solemnly blessed on September 11, 1904. It is a striking landmark that complements the sacredness and imposing nature of Monte de Santa Eufémia.
