The Church of São Cristóvão is located in the parish of Rio Mau, in the municipality of Vila do Conde, in the district of Porto.
The church is the only vestige of an old monastery founded in the 11th century, with the first mention of this monastery dating from 1103. The church was rebuilt from 1151 and is an important example of Romanesque art in Portugal.
This monument was classified as a National Monument in 1910, highlighting its historical and cultural importance.
The church has a single nave with a wooden roof. The portals are particularly noteworthy, with the north side portal featuring a tympanum sculpted with figures of a dragon and a griffin, symbolizing the struggle between good and evil.
The main portal has a complex tympanum with the figure of a bishop, possibly Saint Augustine, flanked by deacons and symbolic figures. The capitals follow the Benedictine Romanesque style, with intriguing representations that still generate varied interpretations.
After the extinction of the monastery in 1443, the church survived and remained in use, despite the demolition of the conventual dependencies. It was restored in the 20th century, thus preserving its history and art.
It is a place of interest for tourists who appreciate history, Romanesque architecture, and Portuguese culture. A visit to the church allows one to explore an important historical legacy of the region.
