Retorta is a locality integrated into the parish of Campo, in the municipality of Valongo. It constitutes an active center, where community life manifests intensely through various cultural and sporting initiatives.

History and Theatrical Legacy:

The history of Retorta is deeply linked to the performing arts, particularly theater. The Grupo Dramático e Recreativo da Retorta, a public utility institution, was formally established in 1942 by a group of local enthusiasts. However, records indicate an earlier presence, with rehearsals dating back to a grocery store cellar in the place itself, revealing a cultural legacy that has endured for decades.

Since its inception, this group has distinguished itself by its inclusive nature, welcoming people of all backgrounds and educational levels, united by a common passion for the stage. Throughout its existence, theater has remained the fundamental pillar of Retorta, driving its activity and contributing significantly to the cultural dynamism of the municipality of Valongo and neighboring communities. The pursuit of innovation has marked its trajectory, with the introduction of external directors and the modernization of production techniques, integrating light and sound as essential elements of the plays.

Current Dynamism and Activities:

In addition to theater, Retorta has diversified its offerings over time. From the 1990s onwards, it expanded its activities, integrating sections dedicated to dance, futsal, athletics, and gymnastics, among other disciplines. This evolution is reflected in its infrastructure, with the construction of the Oficina d’Artes da Retorta, a modern space that includes a pavilion and a multi-purpose room, inaugurated in 2009. Currently, the expansion project continues, with the construction of a new theater and social headquarters, strengthening the venue's capacity to host various cultural and sporting activities.

The dynamism of Retorta is also visible in initiatives such as FESTAR, Festival de Teatro Amador da Retorta, an event that fosters new talent and the creation of audiences for the arts, and the Theater Training School, crucial for the continuity and artistic renewal of the group. The dance sections, such as the Pés de Chumbo and the Pézinhos de Chumbo, and the futsal academy enrich the range of activities available, consolidating Retorta's role as a vibrant center of culture and sports in the community.
