The Pillory of Rates is located in front of the old Rates Town Hall, in the parish of Rates, belonging to the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim, in the district of Porto.
This pillory was built after the granting of a charter by D. Manuel I, in the 16th century. Originally, it represented the autonomy of Rates as a municipality, but in 1836, Rates was integrated into Póvoa de Varzim, losing that status.
In 1933, the Pillory of Rates was classified as a Property of Public Interest, highlighting its historical and cultural importance.
The pillory has a raised base with three circular steps. The first step is made of stone blocks that are not well aligned. The capital is a cylindrical block with an annulet around it.
Unlike many pillories that have been reconstructed, this one retains original features from the 16th century, which makes it special.
The Pillory of Rates is an interesting place for visitors to learn about local history and admire the ancient architecture. It is a great spot to take pictures and learn more about the region.
