One of the oldest and most important Romanesque monuments in Portugal, the Church of São Pedro de Rates stands out for its medieval architecture and artistic value.
Located in the village of Rates, in the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim, near the Ave River basin, in a historical point in the northern region of Portugal.
This church is linked to the legendary figure of Saint Peter of Rates, considered the first bishop of Braga, who, according to tradition, was ordained by the apostle Saint James himself.
Classified as a National Monument since 1910, the church is protected for its cultural and historical value.
The current structure dates back to the 13th century, when it was restored under the influence of the Benedictines and the Order of Cluny, from an even older church from the Suevo-Visigothic period (6th century).
Vestiges of a previous church, such as the bases of the columns and some capitals, can still be seen, reflecting the various phases of construction over the centuries.
Until the 16th century, the church housed the body of Saint Peter of Rates, which was later transferred to the Cathedral of Braga.
