The Honra de Barbosa, also known as the Tower of Barbosa, is located in Rans, in the municipality of Penafiel.
Founded in the 12th century by D. Mem Moniz de Ribadouro, this honra (honor) was an administrative unit until it was extinguished in 1834 and integrated into the municipality of Penafiel.
The tower is one of the oldest examples of military architecture in Portugal. The current structure dates from the 14th century, having undergone reforms during the reigns of D. João I and D. Manuel I.
Tradition indicates that the first construction on the site dates back to 866, related to donations made by Afonso III of Asturias.
Over the centuries, the tower and the associated house have changed functions, serving both as a fortification and as a noble residence.
Several noble families, including that of D. Inês de Sousa and the Ataíde family, were linked to the Honra de Barbosa, which was passed down from generation to generation, accumulating administrative and judicial power in the region.
The ownership of the quinta (estate) and the Tower of Barbosa has remained in the Ataíde Azevedo family to this day, preserving the historical legacy of the honra.
For tourists, the Honra de Barbosa offers a rich historical experience, with the opportunity to explore the medieval tower and learn more about the Portuguese nobility.
