The Rancho Folclórico de Arcozelo is located in São Félix da Marinha, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia. Although its name refers to the village of Arcozelo, also in Vila Nova de Gaia, its headquarters are situated in this broader area of Douro Litoral. This location offers a setting that combines coastal proximity with the characteristics of communities that historically maintained strong ties to the land and their traditions.
Founded in 1978, this folk group adopted the name "Arusgade Arcozelo". This name has a symbolic origin and refers to the ancient "rusgas", which were spontaneous gatherings of boys and girls who, singing and dancing, would head to party venues. The choice of this name emphasizes a strong connection to the identity and community spirit of Arcozelo village, celebrating a traditional form of gathering and cultural expression that existed in the region.
Since its inception, the Rancho Folclórico de Arcozelo has diligently dedicated itself to the collection, research, and reconstitution of popular traditions. The work developed by this group is fundamental for the preservation of local ethnographic heritage, ensuring that the songs, dances, costumes, and customs that once marked the lives of the people of Douro Litoral do not fall into oblivion. Its affiliation with the Portuguese Folklore Federation attests to the commitment and seriousness with which they approach this mission of cultural safeguarding, sharing their legacy with future generations.
