Quinta do Paço de Arnelas is located at the southern edge of the Arnelas area, in the locality of Olival, belonging to the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia. One of its most striking geographical features is its extensive riverfront, approximately 445 meters long, along the bank of the Douro River. The property occupies a considerable area, spreading across lands that include both steeply sloping areas and flatter areas, the latter formerly dedicated to agricultural production.
Its position on the riverbank and the variety of its terrain shape the surrounding landscape, placing it within a natural and historical context characteristic of this Douro area.
This rural complex has deep historical roots, dating back at least to the mid-18th century. Over the centuries, Quinta do Paço de Arnelas was linked to prominent families in Portuguese society. It is known to have been owned by the Counts of Feira and, at another time, was part of the Casa do Infantado.
At the end of the 19th century, the estate belonged to the Viscountess of Balsemão and her husband. Its presence and relevance in the territory are documented, having been represented, for example, in an engraving of Arnelas dated 1849, by Cesário Augusto Pinto.
The built complex of Quinta do Paço de Arnelas is considered to be of great heritage value. Although the precise identification of its oldest buildings may present challenges, the complex as a whole reflects the evolution and importance of historical rural estates in the region.
Due to its significance, Quinta do Paço de Arnelas benefits from a level of integral protection in the Vila Nova de Gaia Municipal Master Plan regulation, thus recognizing its historical and cultural importance.
The property also stands out for its natural environment. With a total area of approximately 10.8 hectares, a significant portion of its territory is covered by an extensive forest area. This forest not only contributes to the landscape but also plays a relevant ecological role, helping to prevent erosion on the slopes.
Given its environmental importance, a large part of the unbuilt area of the estate has been classified as a Fundamental Ecological Structure and is part of the National Ecological Reserve, underlining its value for biodiversity and the balance of the local ecosystem.
Quinta do Paço de Arnelas was once a complex dedicated to agricultural production. Its flatter, fertile lands, of sedimentary origin, were used for crops such as corn. Traces of this past activity can still be found on the estate.
Among the current vegetation, older fruit trees such as chestnut, fig, and loquat trees still exist, and old supports, such as beams, which once served to support vineyards, are also observed, evidencing the property's original agro-forestry vocation.
