Quinta do Monte is located in Foz do Douro, one of Porto's most emblematic areas, within the district known as Burgal or Foz Velha. This privileged location, close to the mouth of the Douro River, allows visitors to immerse themselves in an urban environment that still preserves traces of its past and original charisma. The site naturally integrates into the historic fabric of the Invicta city, offering a unique perspective on its evolution.
With a history dating back centuries, Quinta do Monte possesses a profound and multifaceted legacy. Once part of the Couto de S. João Baptista da Foz do Douro, this property was under the jurisdiction of the Benedictine Monastery of Santo Tirso, denoting its importance and antiquity. Over time, the quinta was known by various designations, such as Quinta do Romualdo, Quinta da Boavista, and Quinta do Monte Belo, reflecting its successive transformations and different owners who shaped its identity over the centuries.
Later, the quinta passed through other notable hands, including those of António Francisco Maya and, subsequently, the Baron of Flagdate. These transitions of ownership consolidate its rich narrative and its status as a significant residence in Foz do Douro, bearing witness to different eras and ways of life in Porto.
The interiors of Quinta do Monte reveal a remarkable decorative diversity, constituting a valuable artistic and architectural collection for visitors. One can appreciate the mastery present in various elements, such as the stone carving, which showcases the art of working with stone precisely; the tilework, with its patterns and colors that tell stories; and the ironwork, which adds intricate and functional details. However, the highlight is the elaborate artistic stuccoes, authored by the renowned Oficina Baganha. The importance of these elements is such that their original molds and designs are classified as Municipal Heritage by the Porto City Council, and are carefully preserved by entities dedicated to heritage restoration. This decorative richness testifies to the high level of art and attention to detail that characterized the construction and evolution of the quinta over the centuries.
