The Casa e Quinta do Covêlo is located in the northern part of Porto, integrated into the urban environment of the Covelo area. It is situated in a consolidated residential zone, bordered by several streets that surround the green space. Its location within the city's fabric makes it a convenient access point for those exploring this part of Porto.
The history of this place dates back to its origin as the old Quinta de Paranhos. It was bequeathed with the specific purpose of being used for hospital purposes, an intention that, however, was not fully realized in its entirety. The management and ownership of the quinta evolved over time, passing under the purview of Porto City Council, in collaboration with the State. Since the 1980s, the municipality has taken over the management of the entire space, orienting it for public enjoyment. The current configuration of the park is the result of a recovery project carried out in the late 1980s.
With an area of around eight hectares, Quinta do Covêlo constitutes one of the city's significant green spaces. It presents varied topography, including a small hill in the upper part, covered by autochthonous vegetation, such as different types of pines and oaks. In the lower area, the landscape softens with an extensive lawn dotted with trees and where the old manor house is located. Tree-lined paths and resting areas invite visitors to appreciate the tranquility of the place.
Currently, Quinta do Covêlo is configured for the recreation and leisure of the population and visitors. The area that once housed the municipal greenhouses has been redeveloped and transformed into a children's playground, making it an appealing location for families. The replacement of the old wall with a metal fence allowed for an open view of the quinta's interior for those passing by on the surrounding streets, better integrating it into its urban environment. The space is maintained and animated to promote recreational and environmental education activities.
