Quinta da Revolta is located in the area known as Revolta, in the civil parish of Campanhã, Porto city. It is situated in an elevated position that provides an interesting visual relationship with the surrounding green area and the Tinto River valley which runs nearby. The atmosphere is that of an old rural property integrated into the urban fabric, offering a contrast to the denser city.
The history of Quinta da Revolta dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Originally, it functioned as a country house for wealthy families from Porto, such as the Viscounts of Balsemão, who also owned a palace in the city center. The name "Revolta" (Revolt) is curious and is believed to have originated from an event, possibly an insurrection, that occurred in the vicinity of the property at that time.
The main house of the quinta features an L-shaped plan, developing over two floors. This structure encloses a central courtyard, creating a more secluded interior space. The chapel, dedicated to Our Lady of the Conception, is directly connected to one of the wings of the house, distinguished by its own volume.
One of the most notable elements of the quinta is the noble entrance portal to the forecourt. This portal is topped by a pediment and displays a coat of arms combining the crests of three families linked to the property's history: Alvo, Brandão, and Azevedo, surmounted by a viscount's crown. Inside the chapel, visitors can observe polychromatic tile panels with motifs in shades of green, white, and "oxblood," as well as the altar's retable with sober lines.
The central space of the quinta is occupied by a forecourt with a garden. This garden features a design with boxwood, forming flowerbeds around a circular granite tank. The house, although of considerable size, presents a simple exterior appearance, with openings framed by granite. The ensemble reflects its original function as an agricultural and summer house, where daily life unfolded in connection with the exterior and the landscape.
The cultural and historical importance of Quinta da Revolta is officially recognized. The property is classified as a Monument of Public Interest, emphasizing its architectural value and its role in the memory and identity of the Campanhã region and the city of Porto.
