Location

Situated in Miramar, within the urban area of Senhor da Pedra, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, Praia do Senhor da Pedra stretches along the Atlantic coast. It is characterized by an extensive sandy beach, which gradually widens to the south, offering an open space. Its proximity to the residential area of Miramar gives it an accessible environment, integrated into the local coastal landscape. Along this coastal zone, there are walkways that invite tranquil strolls by the sea.

The Sanctuary on the Sea

The most striking element of this beach is the unique Chapel of Senhor da Pedra, which gives it its name. This small construction, with its hexagonal plan, is impressively erected on rocks that protrude into the sea. Built in 1686, its unusual location, exposed to the Atlantic elements, is truly scenic and distinctive. It is believed that this site was once a pagan worship point, later transformed into a Christian temple. Inside, the chapel reveals a main altar and two side altarpieces in gilded woodcarving, in Baroque/Rococo style, complemented by religious statues and monochromatic tile panels.

Tradition and Festival

The beach is the main setting for the Romaria do Senhor da Pedra, one of the oldest and most cherished festivities in Vila Nova de Gaia. This religious and popular event, which begins on Holy Trinity Sunday (usually in June) and lasts for three days, attracts a large number of participants. The pilgrimage is a vibrant moment of celebration and tradition, where the sacred merges with the coastal environment, creating a genuine and memorable cultural experience.

Natural Harmony

Praia do Senhor da Pedra exhibits the typical characteristics of the Atlantic coast. Its extensive golden sand is bathed by ocean waters that, although vigorous and with frequent waves, are known for their cleanliness. The presence of dunes in some sections gives the landscape a wilder and more natural touch, contrasting with the more urbanized areas. Pointed rocks are observed scattered along the waterline, adding a visual and natural element to the beach. Wind is a frequent companion, and the water temperature typically remains cooler.
